We are sad to report the news that Ethel Smith has died. She was ninety two. Ethel and her husband Dennis were members of KBC from its early days and when her husband died, Ethel presented the club with the Dennis Smith memorial trophy for which we play every year. She will be remembered fondly by many of us.
Christmas 2011
Having just returned from Singapore, the temperature difference of 25 degrees has shocked me into deciding to produce a few notes on the club prior to Christmas.
To date our membership level is well below last year’s 107, so any subscriptions would be gratefully appreciated and we do have room for more members.
Bridge sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays are progressing well, but we could do with more players on Thursdays. Please bear in mind there are seventeen people listed on the website willing to play with any partner on Thursday evenings. Stephen Southorn is dealing with the Parish Council to try and resolve the heating issues that have suddenly arisen on Thursdays.
Membership numbers are important and we hope that Chris Close’s improver classes will in time produce some new members. Chris has had as many as sixteen to his class but the general number has settled down to about a dozen. The classes resume on the 19th January and if you know of anyone who is interested they can contact Chris on 937 2032.
I was particularly sorry to miss the Christmas party but I should personally like to thank everyone who made it, from reports I have received, a great success.
I should specifically like to thank David Burgess for running the bridge event on the evening.
The first half of the season has been slightly disappointing in the teams of eight competition. Keyworth A is in mid table in the first division. Keyworth B has four home matches in the second half of the season and therefore I am optimistic that they can recover their position in the third division.
Don’t forget there is no bridge between Christmas and New Year but I should like to take this opportunity of wishing all members an enjoyable Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Best Wishes
John
Playing Sessions
Our Monday Tuesday and Thursday sessions are all proceeding as well as
last season. On Mondays we have 5/6 tables, on Tuesdays 9/10 tables
and on Thursdays 5/6 tables. It would be very good if we could encourage a
few more players on Thursdays because at 5/6 tables we lose money on the
evenings. In support of this if anyone is looking for a partner,
please feel free to telephone Val or myself ( Tel no. 9233345) and we may be
able to arrange a partner.
At all sessions we need to remember the good etiquette of bridge and make
the events friendly and welcoming for all.
Village Hall Security
Neville Denham has taken over from Mary Keyworth as the keyholder
coordinator. We thank him for that and if anyone would like to volunteer for
taking a turn at opening and closing the Hall please contact Neville.
It is not a difficult task or time consuming activity- even I can handle it!
Please note the following dates in November and December:
8th November Committee meeting- If anyone has something
they wish to have discussed, please let me know.
15th November Children in Need Simultaneous
Pairs ( see below)
17th November Harry Ratcliffe Bowl.
29th November Christmas party
6th December EBU
Simultaneous pairs.
For other
events check the "fixtures" page on the website.
If anyone requires a
hard copy of this newsletter, please contact Martin Mellor.
Wishing you good Bridge over the next few weeks and always of course.
Regards
John Watson
Chairman
Remember your etiquette at the table
greet the new
opponents,
refrain from
discussing the last hand after the boards have moved,
at all times
be polite to your partner as well as the opposition.
The game should be enjoyable for everyone
and no one should be made to feel embarrassed.
Mistakes are never made on purpose. Criticising your partner can often make the
opposition feel uncomfortable.
Wait until you get into the car park before starting the post mortem!!
Law 45 B Play of Card from Dummy
Declarer plays a card from dummy by naming the card, after which dummy picks up the card and faces it on the table. In playing from dummy's hand declarer may, if necessary, pick up the desired card himself.
What does if
necessary mean?
(i) at the tea break dummy goes for coffee
(ii) dummy needs to go to the toilet.
These are the most
obvious occasions where declarer can legally pick out the cards from dummy.
There may be others.
All players should develop good habits.
